Christmas Menus

BE MERRY

Mum’s already asked you what you’re doing for Christmas, so you know it can’t be that far away. Time to don a jumper and stock up on bodily reserves.

If you’re booking a party, hassle is not something you’ll find here. Families, work families, solo diners and lovers, you can choose from The Stables for private parties of up to 14, or the Sharing Table for 20. Have a simple set menu or a full blown feast.

SLOW -CO- RUPTION

Dineo Seshee Bopape is a boundary-pushing, sense-bashing artist from Johannesberg and this is her first (and hotly anticipated) solo exhibition in the UK.

She’s deals in sculptural installations made up of everyday items (we’re talking mirrors, bricks, timber) that are then saturated with projected video montages dense with sampled music, re-mixed sound and kaleidoscopic images.

26th August until 27th September at Southbank Centre

What we're listening to

Summer is abundant with music. It’s everywhere. Festivals, pubs, boomboxes.

The choice is overwhelming, and sometimes it feels like the only real option is to play The Best Of The Beach Boys as you drive with your windows rolled up and the air con blasting.

We’re not knocking that, but there is an alternative. We’ve made you a summer playlist. Your one stop destination for a neatly curated collection of new music worth listening to.

Find a sunbeam, put your headphones on, zone out.

COOL INFOGRAPHICS

Oh internet, let us count the ways we love thee.
We’ll start with the rise of the infographic.

Cool Infographics round up the best visualisations of weird and wonderful data. To demonstrate with a simple equation: geeky facts + brilliant design = nerd heaven.

Things that await your attention: the deconstruction of wingbeats of different flying species, the history of the Batmobile and the speed of light demonstrated in a 45 minute video of the solar system. Cool huh?

U.S. INTERIOR

The US Department of the Interior busies itself with protecting America’s great outdoors, but apparently saves a little time to also take phenomenal photos.

We’re talking vast lakes reflecting the most beautiful skies you’ve ever seen. Constellations, canyons, glaciers, bear cubs hugging their mother, waterfalls, sunsets, double rainbows emerging from forgotten caves ridden by baby turtles. That last one is a bit of a lie but it wouldn’t be out of place.

WHO DID YOU MEET?

Once upon a time, we chatted to strangers, brought jams to neighbours in times of plenty and said hello to passersby.  We hear it still happens up North.

We also hope one might choose to shoot the breeze with fellow diners at the sharing table.  Maybe you might debate current affairs; maybe you share a secret haunt; maybe you might just pass the pepper.

ORNAMENTAL CONIFER

Meet Nicolai Sclater, a sign writer once based in Hackney, now living in LA, who’s known better around the world as Ornamental Conifer.

When we say around the world, we mean it. His instantly identifiable typography and doodles are etched and emblazoned on to almost everything in all four corners of the planet. Leather jackets, motorcycle helmets and tanks, shop fronts, country houses, glass bottles, skateboards, tshirts, vans and in his self-made zines.

He’s hot property and almost completely inimitable. Check out his designs and then piece together the rest for yourself as you spot them around London.

DAILY CAKE QUOTIENT

Everyday, our kitchen brings us a jar of cookies.  Or sometimes a pretty little cake stand with a banana loaf.  Macaroons.  Meringues.   Depends how they’re feeling.  But everyday, regardless, there is a new batch of home made treats to eye up on your way in and have with a cup of tea.
